Bay Of Islands Vintage Railway

The Bay Of Islands Vintage Railway is in operation several times each day from Kawakawa. This is a tourist train service running to Taumarere.

The line originally ran from Kawakawa direct to the port of Opua in the mining days. The line fell into disrepair and was shut down in 1974. In the last few years a local trust was set up to restore the railway. It has been back in operation for about 5 years now.

All the bridges on the way to Opua had to be upgraded and they are 3/4 of the way thru this process. They are up to Taumarere currently. You can ride the Bay Of Islands Vintage Railway from Kawakawa to Taumarere. For more info on times and ticket prices check out their website
