Christ Church (Oldest Church in NZ)
Christ Church is located right in the heart of Russell Township, Bay of Islands. Christ's Church is the oldest church in New Zealand. Founded in 1836 the church has had an interesting life.
Some of the oldest graves in New Zealand are located here, and offer some interesting reading. The Church survived the "Sacking of Kororareka" where much of the town was destroyed by Hone Heke and his men during the Northern War. Make sure you walk to the side of the church to see ancient bulletholes, from a time when Russell was named the "Hell hole of the Pacific".
These days things are a lot calmer and relaxed. The church grounds have a quietness and sense of peace. When in Russell stop by Christ Church loacted across the road from the Russell Museum.
